What will I study?

As a student on the Engineering and Sciences pathway of the International Foundation Year, you will study all the core modules as well as additional modules depending on which subject route you choose.

Core modules

In the Academic English Skills module, you’ll develop the English language skills you need to succeed academically. You’ll explore a variety of topics divided into three themes Health and Lifestyle, Global Issues and Technology.

Through engaging tasks, you’ll practice integrating key skills, such as reading into writing and listening into speaking, all tailored to help you communicate effectively in an academic setting. You’ll also work on vital study skills, including finding and evaluating sources and managing your time. By completing this module, you’ll meet the English language requirements for undergraduate degrees in Ireland and feel confident participating in university life.

The Mathematics module gives you a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics, preparing you for progression onto UCD. You’ll sharpen your problem-solving skills and deepen your understanding of essential mathematical concepts. This module is designed to ensure you’re ready for the academic challenges in your chosen field, providing the specific knowledge and skills you’ll need for success in your degree programme.

In the Physics module, you’ll build a foundation in physics concepts essential for undergraduate degrees. You’ll learn about motion, work, and energy, temperature and heat, basic fluid dynamics and introductory nuclear and atomic physics. You’ll also participate in laboratory sessions where you’ll gain hands-on experience conducting experiments safely and effectively. This module prepares you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to excel in your undergraduate programme.

The Fundamentals of Scientific Enquiry module equips you with the scientific thinking skills needed for success at university. You’ll develop a framework for approaching problems in the sciences, laying the groundwork for deeper exploration as you progress in your studies. This module ensures you’re prepared with the mindset and analytical skills required for degrees in engineering and science related fields.

In the Chemistry module, you’ll gain foundational knowledge of chemistry. You’ll develop a strong theoretical understanding of chemistry principles, practical skills and confidence in performing laboratory experiments and awareness of chemical safety and its importance in your field.

By understanding the role of chemistry you’ll develop the critical knowledge and skills needed to succeed in your undergraduate studies.

The Life, University, and Intercultural Skills module is all about helping you adapt to life and learning in Ireland. You’ll focus on adjusting to the Irish higher education system, developing cultural awareness and self-efficacy skills, learning strategies to succeed in your academic and personal life. This module ensures you’re ready to navigate your new environment with confidence, bridging the gap between your previous education and university life.

The Data Analysis module equips you with the statistical and analytical skills you’ll need for higher-level studies at university. You’ll extend your abilities in data analysis, focusing on techniques like regression analysis, while also learning how to communicate complex technical information effectively. By the end of this module, you’ll have the tools and knowledge to progress onto in data-intensive undergraduate programmes

Engineering and Computer Science modules

In the Computer Programming module, you’ll take your first steps into the world of programming using Python, a beginner-friendly and versatile programming language. You’ll start by learning to write pseudocode and create flowcharts before progressing to writing your first Python scripts. The module covers basic operations and syntax, conditional statements (ifs) and loops and declaring functions.

As you advance, you’ll explore more complex topics, such as importing libraries and learning the principles of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). You’ll also work on an exciting hands-on Internet of Things (IoT) project, such as integrating a programmable board into a real-life item to create your own “smart” appliance. This module equips you with essential programming skills and a foundation for undergraduate degrees in computing and technology.

Health and Life Sciences modules

In the Biology module, you’ll gain a solid understanding of foundational biology concepts that are crucial for degrees in General Science and Health Sciences. Topics include organism and systems-level biology, cell biology, genetics and biochemistry.

This module ensures you’re prepared to dive deeper into these topics during your undergraduate studies, providing the critical knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

Progress to your degree

After completing your International Foundation Year and achieving the necessary grades, you can transition to your chosen undergraduate degree.  By completing this pathway, you will be able to progress to the following degrees:
