Who is this programme for?

The International Foundation Year prepares you for university with English language and study skills practice, as well as subject-specific teaching. When you complete the programme, achieving the required grades, you will progress to the first year of your undergraduate degree.

You choose your route depending on which undergraduate degree you plan to study. There are two routes: Business and Social Science, Arts and Humanities. The route you choose impacts the modules you will study.

What will I study? 

As a student on the Business, Social Science, Arts and Humanities pathway of the International Foundation Year, you will study all the core modules as well as additional modules depending on which subject route you choose.

Core modules 

In the Academic English Skills module, you’ll develop the English language skills you need to succeed academically. You’ll explore a variety of topics divided into three themes Health and Lifestyle, Global Issues and Technology.

Through engaging tasks, you’ll practice integrating key skills, such as reading into writing and listening into speaking, all tailored to help you communicate effectively in an academic setting. You’ll also work on vital study skills, including finding and evaluating sources and managing your time. By completing this module, you’ll meet the English language requirements for undergraduate degrees in Ireland and feel confident participating in university life. 

The Mathematics module gives you a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics, preparing you for progression onto UCD. You’ll sharpen your problem-solving skills and deepen your understanding of essential mathematical concepts. This module is designed to ensure you’re ready for the academic challenges in your chosen field, providing the specific knowledge and skills you’ll need for success in your degree programme. 

In the Economics module, you’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. You’ll learn about how individuals and businesses make decisions, concepts like scarcity, choice, trade-offs and opportunity cost. In addition you’ll develop your knowledge of  economic cycles and indicators such as growth, inflation, unemployment and balance of payments. This module equips you with the tools to analyse economic issues and provides the foundation you need for further studies in related undergraduate programmes. You’ll gain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the world of economics.

The Introduction to Business module helps you understand how businesses operate and are structured. You’ll explore topics such as starting a business and understanding legal structures, leadership styles and how they influence organisations and ethical practices in the business world. By the end of this module, you’ll have a solid understanding of the key principles of business and management, preparing you for undergraduate studies in business or related fields. You’ll also gain insight into the cultural and professional expectations of the business world. 

The Life, University, and Intercultural Skills module is all about helping you adapt to life and learning in Ireland. You’ll focus on adjusting to the Irish higher education system, developing cultural awareness and self-efficacy skills, learning strategies to succeed in your academic and personal life. This module ensures you’re ready to navigate your new environment with confidence, bridging the gap between your previous education and university life.

Business and Finance modules

In the Introduction to Accounting and Finance module, you’ll develop the essential numeracy skills required for success in accounting and finance. You’ll learn the basic principles of accounting and how to interpret financial statements to make informed financial decisions in organisational settings. This module prepares you for undergraduate studies by providing the foundational knowledge and skills needed to thrive in degrees related to accounting and finance. 

The Data Analysis module equips you with the statistical and analytical skills you’ll need for higher-level studies at university. You’ll extend your abilities in data analysis, focusing on techniques like regression analysis, while also learning how to communicate complex technical information effectively. By the end of this module, you’ll have the tools and knowledge to progress onto in data-intensive undergraduate programmes. 

In the Digital Business module, you’ll gain an understanding of the key concepts behind digital businesses and the online marketplace. You’ll explore how organisations use digital marketing strategies, relationship marketing and various online platforms to succeed in the digital space. This module will provide you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital business world, preparing you for undergraduate degrees in related fields. 

Social Science, Arts and Humanities modules

The Introduction to Sociology module introduces you to the fundamental concepts and debates in sociology. Through case studies, you’ll explore key themes, theories and methods used to understand and interpret social phenomena. This module will help you apply sociological concepts to everyday life, providing you with the critical knowledge and skills required for undergraduate degrees in Social Science, Arts and Humanities  

In the Globalisation module, you’ll explore the concept of globalisation and its impact on global society. You’ll develop critical academic skills as you analyse contemporary issues and construct arguments in both written and oral formats. This module will deepen your understanding of the factors shaping globalisation and its effects, preparing you for academic success at university. 

The Critical Reading module helps you master one of the most important skills in higher education: reading critically. You’ll learn how to evaluate sources, identify bias, distinguish between fact and opinion and relate information across different contexts. As you analyse texts with guidance from your tutors, you’ll gain confidence in understanding complex material and applying critical thinking to your studies.
